Sometimes I eat at a place and absolutely love it, but then I forget about it....for like years. This was the case with District of Pi. I went there when they first opened in 2012 and then again in 2013 and then they fell off my radar. District of Pi is an extension of the original Pi located in St. Louis, Missouri. They now have four locations. In DC, it's a lively pizzeria with awesome pizza and tons of toppings! And I'm pretty sure it is the only place to get real deep-dish pizza in DC!
Deep-dish pizza is like a pie filled with goodies, topped with tomato sauce. It's best known in Chicago and I'm so thankful we can enjoy it here too. And instead of torturing vegans by bringing non-vegan deep-dish to our city, they serve us and gluten-free people too! Be aware that they do require six hours of notice if you would like a vegan pie, so be sure to call ahead. That allows them time to clean the pan (usually coated with butter) and prep the dough vegan-style.
While they have many appetizers and salads, we just wanted pizza and lots of it. On this particular night, the restaurant was packed with Washington Capitals fans and it was quite loud. We were so pleased to be seated in the back room (after a 25-minute wait) where it is much quieter than the front.
Chris is a big fan of just mushrooms and onions while I love loading the pizza with toppings. But, with premium toppings at $2.25 each, I could only choose so many. The topping menu is pretty impressive with toppings like artichokes, spinach, portobello mushrooms, and sundried tomatoes, they really have it all covered.
We ordered a large cornmeal crust deep-dish with different toppings on each half of the pizza. On one side, we had wild mushrooms, yellow onions, Match Meat vegan Italian sausage, and Daiya vegan cheese. On the other half, we had wild mushrooms, red onions, basil, jalapeno, Match Meat, and Daiya vegan cheese.
After 25 minutes, it arrived and Chris said, "Where is the cheese?" I said, "On deep-dish, it's under the tomato sauce!" Then, we were in pure pizza heaven. The cornmeal crust was crumbly to the touch and delightful to the mouth. The Daiya cheese was melted through and through and the toppings were plentiful. Chris loved the Match Meat Italian sausage too, which was loaded with fennel. Yum!
We didn't quite finish the large as a small is probably plenty for two. Our eyes were bigger than our tummies. The pie ended up being like $30! But, hey, that's one loaded pizza pie. Our server was great and environment fun. Hopefully, I'll remember to come back in less than two years!
