In a city that appeared to have about two vegan options, Palm Springs, California was definitely not a vegan mecca. After a disappointing lunch, the Palm Greens Cafe was my last hope for a good meal in this city before I left town.
As I entered the restaurant, they told me I could have a seat anywhere. It is a brightly lit, casual restaurant that wasn't very crowded at the time. I started with glass of wine as I perused the menu. They serve meat, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and even raw entrees and they had a bunch of vegan specials as well. Since I didn't have the opportunity to eat raw too often, I decided to order the raw vegan entree.
The restaurant had an interesting decor with paper lamps hanging from the ceiling and paintings with mountains on the walls. On one wall there were some old shutters with paintings behind them. It was very eclectic. Then, to top it off, there were two televisions showing scenery in California.
When my entree arrived, I was pretty impressed as it looked pretty good. It was a raw lasagna consisting of zucchini noodles sliced thinly stuffed with spinach, marinated mushrooms, and a cashew cheese and topped with a fresh marinara sauce. The cashew cheese was the perfect texture and consistency while the marinara was delightfully fresh. It was great!
For dessert, I went with the raw cheesecake with strawberry sauce. The cheesecake was pretty good with its nut-based crust and shredded coconut and cashew filling. The fresh strawberry sauce, however, needed a bit more sugar.
I was pretty stuffed by the end of the meal. This is definitely the best place to eat in Palm Springs. The food is organic and good, the service is good, and the prices aren't bad. If I ever find myself in Palm Springs again, this will be the first place I go.
