While in Berkeley, I discovered a new brand of tofu -- Tofu Yu. This soy beanery, located in Berkeley, supplies northern California with delicious, artisanal tofu. While I didn't try their packaged tofu because I was on the go, I did pick up a package of their Spicy Veggie Wraps and they were so good that I had to write about them.
I brought the wraps to an event I was attending at which I knew I wouldn't be able to find any fine vegan food. The wraps are made of flat tofu, which is made of organic soy beans, magnesium chloride, and water. The tofu, which I think was actually yuba or tofu skins, was layered with carrots, lettuce, red onions, jalapeno peppers, mushrooms, Vegenaise, and Dijon mustard. They were absolutely delicious and very filling! The soft tofu (or yuba) provided a nice complement to the crunchy veggies and was a great tasty lunch to go.
As it appears they don't distribute outside of northern California, you can only enjoy these there. Why DC - why don't you have a soy beanery? As I continue to be reminded that life isn't always fair...
