Elizabeth's Gone Raw, DC #3

Elizabeth's Gone Raw is quickly becoming one of my favorite restaurants in DC. As the only upscale raw vegan restaurant in DC, it has no competition, but rest assured, if it did, it would still be one of the best. Having dined at many raw restaurants across the country, this one ranks with the best.

On this particular night, we were seated at a table near the window. As usual, we were served an amuse bouche of spicy kale chips -- a crowd pleaser. I have yet to hear anyone say they don't enjoy these delicious kale chips.  We went ahead and ordered a bottle of the Lemelson Pinot Noir from Willamette Valley, which turned out to be one of the best Pinot Noirs I've ever had.

The first course was a soup made with kelp noodles, fresh bok choy, and yellow oyster mushrooms in a light broth made of lemongrass, ginger, miso, nama shoyu, scallions, garlic, and salt.  I loved the oyster mushrooms  and kelp noodles, but didn't care for the bok choy as much. I remarked that the bok choy was a bit stringy and was reminded that I had a knife with which I could cut it. I just would have preferred it to have been chopped a bit more.

The next course was an apple salad. As funky as this sounds, it was absolutely delicious! Golden Supreme apples and celeriac were cut into matchsticks, then tossed with a lemon vinaigrette and topped with candied walnuts. The walnuts were candied with agave and cayenne bringing some spice to the dish. We all loved this dish.

The intermezzo was a delicious cantaloupe sorbet served with basil oil, which served to refresh the palate as we waited for the main course.

The next course was a beet carpaccio with macadamia nut cheese served with shaved fennel and a kale salad. Oh my gosh, this was an amazing dish. The combination of the thinly sliced beets with the rich macadamia nut cheese blew me away. The shaved fennel with dill and pine nuts was the perfect accompaniment to this exciting dish. And the kale salad has this wonderful lemon-based dressing that served to bring out the flavor of the fresh kale.

For dessert, we were served chocolate coconut caramel bars with sea salt and raw cacao nibs. Had I died and gone to heaven?  This dish rivaled the previous one for the best dish of the night. The premium chocolate and coconut bars were served with this deliciously sweet chocolate and maple syrup sauce. Yum x 10.

As usual, Elizabeth's never ceases to amaze me. Elizabeth Petty, Tom Berry, and Calvin Lee have turned raw cuisine into an art by serving some of the most amazingly presented meals I've ever seen. They continue to raise the bar on fine raw cuisine. Another 5 star rating.
